Spirit houses in Cambodia and what they mean
Small shrines called spirit houses stand outside homes and businesses across Cambodia. Here's what they are, who lives in them and why people leave offerings.
In this guide
Outside homes, shops, offices and hotels across Cambodia, you'll notice small shrines on posts or platforms, often decorated like miniature temples and filled with offerings. These are spirit houses, and they reflect beliefs that are older than Buddhism in Cambodia.
What is a spirit house?
A spirit house is a home for the spirits believed to live on a piece of land. When people build a house or business, they disturb the land's spirits. Building a spirit house gives them a place to stay and keeps them content, so that they protect the property and its people instead of causing trouble.
What it looks like
Spirit houses vary from simple wooden boxes to elaborate miniature temples in bright colours. Many contain small figures of people or animals, representing the spirits or their servants. They're usually raised on a post or platform, in a spot chosen with care, often with advice from an achar (a lay religious specialist).
Offerings
People leave offerings to keep the spirits happy, especially on special days or before important events. Common offerings include:
- incense sticks
- flowers and garlands
- fruit, rice and small dishes of food
- drinks, sometimes including soft drinks or alcohol
- candles
How it fits with Buddhism
Most Cambodians are Buddhists, but belief in spirits continues alongside Buddhist practice. Many people see no conflict between respecting the Buddha and keeping the local spirits happy. This blend of beliefs is common across mainland Southeast Asia.
Neak Ta and ancestors
Some shrines honour Neak Ta, guardian spirits of a place or community, rather than household spirits. Ancestral spirits are also honoured, particularly during festivals such as Pchum Ben.
Respectful behaviour
- Don't touch or move offerings.
- Don't use spirit houses as props for photos or sit on their platforms.
- Avoid pointing your feet at them.
Spirit houses as souvenirs
Miniature spirit houses are sold in markets as decorative souvenirs. If you buy one, treat it respectfully.
