Spa etiquette in Cambodia

Booking, clothing, communication and tipping: here's what to know about spa etiquette in Cambodia, from simple massage shops to luxury resorts.

In this guide

Spas and massage shops are everywhere in Cambodia's tourist towns, and visiting one is a highlight of many trips. Knowing a few customs helps you relax and get the most from your treatment.

Booking

  • Walk-ins are common at simple massage shops.
  • Book ahead for spas in hotels and resorts, especially in the evening.
  • Arrive a few minutes early to choose your treatment and change.

Before your treatment

  • You may be offered tea or water and a foot wash, a traditional welcome.
  • Tell the staff about allergies, injuries, pregnancy or health conditions.
  • Choose the pressure you want: soft, medium or strong.

Clothing

  • For Khmer and Thai-style massage, you'll usually wear loose clothes provided by the spa.
  • For oil massage, you'll undress to your comfort level, usually keeping your underwear on, and be covered with towels.

During the treatment

  • Speak up if the pressure is too strong or something is uncomfortable.
  • It's fine to be quiet and relax.
  • Keep your phone on silent.

After your treatment

  • Take your time getting up.
  • Drink water.
  • You may be offered tea or a small snack.

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated, especially in local massage shops where therapists' wages are low. Some spas include a service charge; check your bill. Many people tip directly to the therapist.

Respect

  • Treat therapists with respect and professionalism.
  • Inappropriate requests are not acceptable and may be reported to the police.
  • Choose reputable establishments.

Hygiene

Good spas use clean towels and linens for each guest and keep treatment rooms clean. If a place doesn't seem hygienic, try another.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

There's no fixed rule. Many visitors tip a small amount directly to the therapist, more for longer or excellent treatments. Check whether a service charge is already included.

Is it okay to talk during a massage?

Yes, especially to give feedback on pressure. Otherwise, it's fine to stay quiet and relax.

Can I request a male or female therapist?

Usually yes. Ask when booking or when you arrive.

Should I shower before a massage?

It's appreciated, especially before an oil massage or after a hot day at the temples. Many spas have showers.
