Sok San Beach and Koh Rong's quieter west coast

Sok San Beach is a long west-coast stretch of Koh Rong with a fishing village, resorts and some of the island's best sunsets. Here's how to get there and what to expect.

In this guide

On the far side of Koh Rong from the busy ferry village, Sok San Beach stretches for several kilometres along the island's west coast. It's quieter, more spacious and faces the sunset, which makes it a favourite for travellers who want a slower pace.

What it's like

Sok San is a long beach of fine sand with clear water in the dry season. At its northern end lies Sok San village, a fishing community with small shops and simple restaurants. Resorts and guesthouses are spread along the rest of the beach, and long sections remain empty.

Getting there

  • By road: a road crosses the island from Koh Touch to the west coast. Tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis make the trip; the ride takes around half an hour, depending on the vehicle and road conditions.
  • By boat: some resorts arrange boat transfers, and boat trips around the island may stop here.

Things to do

  • Watch the sunset: the main ritual of the day.
  • Swim and walk: the beach is long enough for a proper walk.
  • Visit the village for a look at fishing life, respectfully.
  • Look for plankton on dark nights, away from bright lights.
  • Explore nearby coves by kayak or boat.

Where to stay

Choices range from simple bungalows to comfortable resorts. Most have restaurants, as eating options outside the village are limited.

Who it suits

Sok San suits couples, families and anyone who wants space and sunsets. If you like nightlife, staying near Koh Touch makes more sense; you can visit Sok San on a day trip.

Practical tips

  • Bring cash, as there are no reliable ATMs on this side of the island.
  • Arrange transport back to the ferry in advance, especially for early departures.
  • Bring insect repellent for sandflies and mosquitoes.
  • The sea can be rougher on the west coast during the rainy season.

Best time to visit

The dry season, roughly November to April, offers calm seas and clear sunsets. In the rainy season, expect stronger waves and more cloud, but fewer visitors.
