Koh Rong Sanloem island guide
Koh Rong Sanloem is Cambodia's calm island escape, with Saracen Bay's white sand, quiet west-coast beaches and the fishing village of M'Pai Bay.
In this guide
Koh Rong Sanloem sits just south of Koh Rong and offers a quieter, slower version of island life. There are no busy towns or major roads, just beaches, forest trails and small settlements. It's a favourite with couples, families and anyone who wants to switch off.
Beaches
- Saracen Bay: the island's main beach, a long crescent of white sand on the east coast with calm, shallow water. Most resorts and bungalows are here.
- Lazy Beach: a secluded beach on the west coast, known for sunsets and calm.
- Sunset Beach: another west-coast beach, reached by jungle trail or boat.
- M'Pai Bay: a fishing village in the north, with guesthouses, cafes and a relaxed atmosphere.
- Clearwater Bay: a quiet bay with a few resorts, good for swimming.
Things to do
- Swimming and snorkelling in calm, clear water, especially in the dry season.
- Jungle trails linking beaches; some take 30 to 60 minutes and can be hot and steep.
- Kayaking and paddleboarding from many resorts.
- Watching bioluminescent plankton on dark nights.
- Diving trips to nearby reefs and islands, arranged through dive centres.
- Doing very little: hammocks are a main attraction.
Where to stay
Accommodation ranges from simple fan bungalows to boutique resorts. Saracen Bay has the widest choice and easiest ferry access. The west coast and M'Pai Bay offer more seclusion.
Getting there and around
Ferries run from Sihanoukville to several piers on the island, mainly in Saracen Bay and M'Pai Bay. There are no roads to speak of; you'll move between beaches by walking trail, water taxi or resort boat.
Practical things to know
- Cash: ATMs are scarce or unreliable. Bring enough for your stay.
- Electricity: some places run on generators or solar power with limited hours.
- Wi-Fi: available in most resorts but can be slow.
- Medical care: basic only; serious problems require a trip to the mainland.
When to visit
The dry season, roughly November to April, has calm seas and the best weather. The rainy season brings fewer people and lower prices, but rougher seas can affect ferries.
Tips
- Wear proper shoes on jungle trails.
- Bring a head torch for walking at night.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and take your rubbish back to the mainland if possible.
