Siem Reap Angkor International Airport: what to know

Siem Reap Angkor International Airport opened in 2023, well outside town. Here's what to know about arrivals, visas, money, SIM cards and getting to your hotel.

In this guide

Siem Reap Angkor International Airport is the gateway to the Angkor temples. It opened in 2023, replacing the old airport that was close to town and the temples. The new airport is larger and modern but much further from Siem Reap.

Where it is

The airport lies a significant distance east of Siem Reap town. The transfer usually takes around an hour, depending on traffic and your hotel's location.

Arrival steps

  1. Immigration: have your passport, visa or e-visa and any arrival forms ready. Check whether you need to complete an online arrival form before travel.
  2. Baggage claim.
  3. Customs.
  4. Arrivals hall: transport, ATMs, money exchange and SIM cards.

Visas

Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival or an e-visa in advance. Confirm requirements on official government websites before you fly.

Money and SIM cards

ATMs and exchange counters are available. Mobile operators sell tourist SIM cards in the arrivals hall. eSIMs bought in advance are an alternative.

Getting to town

  • Airport shuttle buses: often the cheapest option; check current schedules.
  • Taxis: from official counters.
  • Hotel transfers: many hotels offer pick-ups, sometimes included in the room rate.
  • Ride-hailing apps: may operate; check pick-up rules.

Tips

  • Arrange transfers in advance, especially for late arrivals.
  • Allow at least an hour to reach the airport from town for departures, plus check-in time.
  • Keep small notes for transport and tips.
  • If you're planning sunrise at Angkor Wat on your first morning, consider the travel time and rest.

Departures

Check in early, as the drive to the airport is long. Many hotels can arrange shuttles timed to your flight.

Frequently asked questions

Why was the airport moved?

The old airport was close to the Angkor temples, and there were long-standing concerns about the effect of aircraft vibrations and growth on the heritage site. The new airport is larger and further from the temples.

Are there shops and restaurants?

Yes, there are cafes, shops and duty-free outlets. Choices are more limited late at night.

Can I buy my Angkor pass at the airport?

The Angkor pass is sold at the official ticket centre and online, not at the airport. Buy it online in advance or at the ticket centre.
