Angkor sunrise tours: what's included and is it worth it

Watching sunrise at Angkor Wat is a classic experience. Here's what sunrise tours include, how early you'll start, where to stand and whether it's worth the alarm.

In this guide

Watching the sun rise behind Angkor Wat's towers is one of Southeast Asia's most famous travel experiences. It's also crowded and requires a very early start. Here's what to expect and how to make the most of it.

How early?

Most sunrise tours pick you up from your hotel between about 4:30 and 5:00 am. Angkor Wat opens early for sunrise visitors; check current opening times. Sunrise itself varies with the season.

What's included

A typical sunrise tour includes:

  • hotel pick-up by tuk-tuk, car or minibus
  • a guide (on guided tours) or just a driver
  • sunrise at Angkor Wat
  • a visit to Angkor Wat after sunrise
  • often the Bayon and Ta Prohm afterwards
  • sometimes breakfast

Entrance tickets are usually not included; you'll need an Angkor pass.

Where to stand

The classic view is from the edge of the ponds in front of Angkor Wat, where the towers reflect in the water. The left-hand pond (north) is usually most popular. Arrive early for a front spot, or stand further back for a wider view with fewer people in front.

Is it worth it?

Yes, if:

  • you enjoy photography or atmospheric moments
  • you're happy to share the experience with many others
  • you want to explore Angkor Wat in the cooler early hours

Maybe not, if:

  • you dislike crowds
  • you struggle with early starts
  • the sky is very cloudy

Alternatives

  • Sunrise at Srah Srang, a peaceful reservoir with fewer people.
  • Sunrise at Phnom Bakheng or Pre Rup.
  • Sunrise from the east side of Angkor Wat, away from the main crowds.

Tips

  • Bring a torch for the walk in the dark.
  • Bring a light layer; mornings can be cool in December and January.
  • After sunrise, head straight into the temple while many people go to breakfast.
  • Around the spring and autumn equinoxes, the sun rises almost directly over the central tower, drawing larger crowds.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if it's cloudy?

The sky may still glow with colour, and clouds can make dramatic photos. If it's heavily overcast, you'll still enjoy exploring the temple in the cool early hours.

Should I eat before the tour?

Bring a light snack. Stalls opposite Angkor Wat sell breakfast and coffee after sunrise.
