Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach on Koh Rong Sanloem

Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach sit on Koh Rong Sanloem's quiet west coast, known for seclusion and sunsets. Here's how to reach them and what to expect.

In this guide

On the west side of Koh Rong Sanloem, away from the ferry piers of Saracen Bay, lie two of Cambodia's most peaceful beaches. Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach are small, quiet and face the setting sun.

Lazy Beach

Lazy Beach is a small bay with soft sand and clear water, known for its secluded feel. Accommodation is limited to a small number of bungalows, which keeps it quiet. In the evening, guests gather on the sand to watch the sun go down.

Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach, a little further along the coast, has a similar mood, with simple bungalows and a laid-back atmosphere. As the name suggests, the evenings are the main event.

Getting there

  • On foot: jungle trails cross the island from Saracen Bay. The walk takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the trail and your pace. Paths can be steep, muddy after rain and hot in the middle of the day.
  • By boat: some accommodation arranges boat transfers, and water taxis can be hired. In rough weather, boats may not be able to land.

What to do

  • Swim and snorkel in the calm dry-season water.
  • Watch the sunset with a drink.
  • Read in a hammock.
  • Look for bioluminescent plankton on dark nights.
  • Walk to the other beach along the coast or trail.

Practical tips

  • Bring cash: there are no ATMs.
  • Bring supplies: shops are limited or absent.
  • Wear proper shoes for the trail and carry water.
  • Use a head torch if walking around after dark.
  • Expect basic facilities: electricity and Wi-Fi may be limited.

When to visit

The dry season, roughly November to April, has the calmest seas. In the rainy season, the west coast can get strong waves, and boat access may be affected.

Who they suit

Travellers who want peace, nature and sunsets more than nightlife or convenience. If you like having restaurants and shops close at hand, stay in Saracen Bay and visit on a day trip.
