Angkor in one day: a realistic temple itinerary
Only have one day at Angkor? This realistic itinerary covers sunrise at Angkor Wat, the Bayon, Ta Prohm and a sunset spot, with tips on timing and pace.
In this guide
One day isn't much for Angkor, but it's enough to see the three most famous temples and get a feel for the scale of the site. The key is an early start, a plan and accepting that you can't see everything.
Before you start
- Buy a one-day Angkor pass at the official ticket centre or online. Check current prices and opening hours on the official site.
- Hire a tuk-tuk or car with driver for the day, or book a guided tour.
- Dress for the temples: shoulders and knees covered.
- Bring water, sun protection and snacks.
The itinerary
Sunrise at Angkor Wat (around 5:00–7:30)
Arrive before dawn and find a spot near the ponds in front of the temple for the classic reflection. After sunrise, explore the temple as many visitors leave for breakfast. Climb to the upper level if it's open.
Breakfast break (7:30–8:30)
Eat at the stalls opposite Angkor Wat or bring something with you.
Angkor Thom and the Bayon (8:30–11:00)
Enter through the South Gate, with its causeway of gods and demons. Explore the Bayon's face towers, then walk to the Baphuon and the Terrace of the Elephants.
Ta Prohm (11:00–12:30)
The temple where trees grow through the ruins. Late morning can be busy; take your time on the quieter side paths.
Lunch and rest (12:30–15:00)
Return to town or eat near the temples. Resting through the hottest hours makes the afternoon much more enjoyable.
Afternoon options (15:00–17:30)
- Revisit Angkor Wat to see the bas-reliefs in the afternoon light, or
- Explore Banteay Kdei and Srah Srang, or
- See Preah Khan, a vast temple with long corridors.
Sunset
Choose Pre Rup or Phnom Bakheng (visitor numbers are limited at Bakheng), or simply watch the light change over Srah Srang.
Tips
- Don't try to see too much; three or four temples done well is better than ten in a rush.
- Drink plenty of water and take breaks in the shade.
- Agree the route and price with your driver the day before.
- If you can, add a second day; it makes a big difference.
