Districts in Takeo

1. Doun Kaev City (Municipal District)

Takeo’s tidy provincial capital feels like a friendly garden town. Wide, tree-lined boulevards lead to a picturesque lake ringed by colonial villas and food stalls. The Independence Monument glows at night, while the bustling central market sells the province’s famous palm sugar and fresh river prawns. It’s the perfect relaxed launchpad for exploring Cambodia’s ancient southern heartland.

2. Angkor Borei District

The cradle of the Funan Kingdom (1st–6th century). Angkor Borei archaeological site and its excellent little museum display exquisite statues pulled from ancient canals. Traditional wooden boats cruise the maze of waterways that once linked Funan to the sea, offering a surreal journey through lotus fields and stilt-house villages.

3. Bati District

Home to the twin hills of Phnom Chisor – a dramatic 11th-century temple reached by a 400-step naga staircase. Sunrise views sweep across endless rice paddies to Vietnam. At the base, weekend picnic parties and blind musicians create one of Cambodia’s most joyful local scenes.

4. Kiri Vong District

Takeo’s palm-sugar capital. Entire villages climb towering trees at dawn to collect sap that’s boiled into golden cakes. The air is thick with caramel scent, and visitors can join the harvest or taste fresh palm juice straight from the bamboo tube.

5. Koh Andaet District

A watery wonderland of canals and floating villages. Traditional long-tail boats glide past lotus farms and wooden houses on stilts. During high water, the district becomes a green mirror reflecting storm clouds – perfect for peaceful kayak exploration.

6. Borei Cholsar District

The gateway to Phnom Da – a 6th-century Funan hilltop temple reached by a thrilling motorbike climb. The ancient laterite tower and cave shrines offer panoramic views and cool breezes. Nearby Asram Maha Russei is a beautifully carved hidden gem few tourists ever see.

7. Samraong District

Classic Khmer countryside of endless rice paddies and sugar-palm silhouettes. Quiet roads are perfect for bicycle rides past traditional wooden houses and small pagodas where monks still practice ancient healing rituals with forest herbs.

8. Prey Kabbas District

Famous for its traditional silk-weaving villages and the sacred Phnom Prey Kabbas hill. Local women work wooden looms under their stilt houses, producing intricate hol patterns. The district’s gentle landscape feels timeless.

9. Tram Kak District

Home to the haunting Choeung Ek-style killing fields memorial at Wat Ang Sdok, and the beautiful Wat Tram Kak with its colourful modern murals. The surrounding plains burst with lotus flowers during rainy season.

10. Treang District

Takeo’s wild southeastern corner with red-dirt roads and ethnic Phnong villages. Hidden waterfalls and sacred forests offer peaceful trekking, while new community homestays let visitors experience authentic minority life far from any tourist trail.

Together, Takeo’s ten districts weave one of Cambodia’s richest tapestries: the birthplace of Khmer civilisation, palm-sugar villages, ancient hilltop temples, canal cruises, and timeless rural beauty—all just an hour from Phnom Penh yet feeling centuries away. Few provinces feel so deeply, authentically Cambodian.
