Prek Toal bird sanctuary: a birdwatcher's guide

Prek Toal, on the Tonle Sap, hosts some of Southeast Asia's largest colonies of large waterbirds. Here's when to visit, what you might see and how to arrange a trip.

In this guide

Prek Toal is one of the most important bird sanctuaries in Southeast Asia. Set in the flooded forests of the Tonle Sap's northwestern corner, it protects breeding colonies of large waterbirds that have disappeared from much of the region. For birdwatchers, it is the highlight of any trip to Cambodia.

What you might see

The sanctuary is known for colonies of:

  • spot-billed pelicans
  • milky storks and painted storks
  • greater and lesser adjutants
  • black-headed ibises
  • Oriental darters
  • cormorants and herons

Many of these species are globally threatened, and the colonies here are among the largest remaining.

When to visit

The best time is the dry season, roughly from December to May, when birds gather to nest and water levels concentrate the fish they feed on. Early in the dry season, water is still high enough for boats to reach the colonies easily. Later in the season, access can become more difficult. The rainy season is less rewarding for birdwatching.

How to get there

Most visits start from Siem Reap. You'll drive to the boat landing on the lake, cross to the floating village of Prek Toal by motorboat, then continue in smaller boats into the core area. Specialist operators and conservation-linked tours arrange the permits, rangers and boats.

The full trip is a long day, starting before dawn. Overnight stays in the village or at a research station may be possible through some operators.

Watching from the platforms

Observation platforms have been built near the colonies, allowing visitors to watch from above the trees without disturbing the birds. A good pair of binoculars or a spotting scope makes a big difference.

Conservation

The colonies were once heavily affected by egg and chick collection. Conservation programmes, working with local people who became rangers, have helped the populations recover. Visitor fees help fund this work.

Tips

  • Book with an operator that works with the sanctuary's rangers.
  • Bring binoculars, sun protection, water and snacks.
  • Wear neutral-coloured clothing.
  • Keep noise to a minimum near the colonies.
  • Combine the trip with the floating village of Prek Toal, but be respectful of residents.
