Getting around Cambodia: an overview of transport options

Buses, minivans, trains, boats, domestic flights, taxis and tuk-tuks: here's how to get around Cambodia, with the pros and cons of each option.

In this guide

Cambodia is a compact country with improving roads, and getting around is generally easy and affordable. Here's an overview of your options, from long-distance buses to tuk-tuks.

Long-distance buses

Buses connect all major towns. Companies run regular day services and some overnight sleeper buses. Comfort varies from basic to modern coaches with air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. Buses are the most common way for travellers to move between cities.

Minivans

Minivans are faster than buses on many routes but can be cramped and driven quickly. They're common on routes to Kampot, Kep, Sihanoukville and the northeast.

Trains

Cambodia's railway has two lines: one from Phnom Penh south to Kampot and Sihanoukville, and one north-west to Battambang and the Thai border at Poipet. Services are limited but comfortable and scenic. Check current schedules before planning around them.

Boats

  • Ferries connect Sihanoukville with Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem.
  • River boats have historically run between Siem Reap and Battambang or Phnom Penh, but services are seasonal and sometimes suspended.
  • Local boats cross rivers and visit islands such as Koh Trong in Kratie.

Domestic flights

Flights are limited but can save time on the Phnom Penh–Siem Reap route and to Sihanoukville. Routes and airlines change often.

Taxis and private drivers

Private cars with drivers are a comfortable option for families and groups, and can stop at sights along the way. Agree the price and route in advance.

In towns

  • Tuk-tuks: the classic option; agree the fare before you ride.
  • Ride-hailing apps: popular in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and other towns, with fares shown upfront.
  • Motorbike taxis (motodops): quick for solo travellers.
  • Bicycles and e-bikes: good in Siem Reap, Battambang and Kampot.

Renting a motorbike

Many travellers rent scooters. Check licence requirements and insurance, wear a helmet and be cautious; traffic can be chaotic.

Travel times

Journeys often take longer than distances suggest, due to traffic, stops and road conditions. Allow extra time, especially in the rainy season and around holidays.

Tips

  • Book buses through your guesthouse or online.
  • Carry snacks and water on long journeys.
  • Keep valuables with you, not in the luggage hold.
  • Avoid travelling during major holidays if possible; transport is packed.
