Districts (Khan) in Phnom Penh

1. Doun Penh

The beating heart of the capital. Colonial boulevards, the Royal Palace’s golden spires, the Silver Pagoda, and the National Museum line the riverside. Street 240’s trendy cafés, rooftop bars, and the glowing night market at Riverside make it Phnom Penh’s most iconic and lively district—where history meets modern buzz.

2. Chamkar Mon

The expat and trendy quarter. BKK1 (Boeng Keng Kang 1) is packed with craft-cocktail bars, international restaurants, yoga studios, and boutique hotels. Bassac Lane’s tiny alley bars and Street 308’s villa cafés give it a hip, walkable vibe, while Independence Monument and Aeon Mall 1 anchor the area.

3. Prampir Meakkakra (7 Makara)

Classic old Phnom Penh. Orussey Market overflows with electronics and gold, while Psar Orussey and Psar Olympic offer authentic Khmer street food. Soviet-era buildings, art-deco cinemas, and the towering Phnom Penh Tower make this central business district feel like a time capsule.

4. Tuol Kouk

The “new downtown” rising fast. TK Avenue, high-rise condos, and rooftop skybars dominate the skyline. Confusingly huge Russian Market (Tuol Tompoung) is actually here, not in Tuol Kork—famous for souvenirs, fake designer goods, and the best hangover noodles in town.

5. Dangkao

Sprawling southern suburbs stretching toward Takeo. Once farmland, now a boom of garment factories, new housing estates, and gigantic wedding halls, and the massive ING City development. Locals escape here for weekend picnics along the Prek Thnout river.

6. Mean Chey

Home to Phnom Penh’s largest wet market—Chak Angre Market—and the chaotic Stung Meanchey garbage dump (now relocated). Rapidly urbanising with new borey gated communities and the city’s biggest nightlife strip along Street 271.

7. Russey Keo

The industrial north across the Japanese Bridge. Home to the night-time “Kbal Thnal” party zone, riverside beer gardens, and the massive Chrisler beer factory, and the new Morodok Techo National Stadium (Sea Games 2023 venue).

8. Sen Sok

Phnom Penh’s fastest-growing district—brand-new boreys, international schools, and the huge AEON Mall 2. Street 2004 is lined with Korean BBQ, cafés, and the city’s biggest concentration of rooftop infinity pools.

9. Pou Senchey

The airport district and western gateway. Home to Phnom Penh International Airport, massive new housing projects, and the upcoming Techo International Airport (under construction). Locals know it for cheap beer warehouses and weekend karaoke resorts.

10. Chroy Changvar

The booming peninsula across the Mekong (connected by the Cambodia-China Friendship Bridge). Once rice fields, now home to luxury condos, embassies, and the massive Koh Pich (Diamond Island) entertainment complex with its replica Arc de Triomphe.

11. Prek Pnov

The rural north along National Road 5. Traditional wooden Khmer houses on stilts, lotus farms, and weekend river resorts where Phnom Penh families escape the heat. The new Mekong River bridge has sparked rapid development.

12. Chbar Ampov

Across the Bassac River via Monivong Bridge. Once sleepy, now exploding with new satellite cities, universities, and the city’s hottest new nightlife along the riverfront. Home to the giant NagaWorld casino complex.

13. Boeng Keng Kang (BKK)

Split into BKK1 (Chamkar Mon), BKK2, and BKK3—this is the embassy district with tree-lined streets, French villas turned into NGOs, and the city’s highest concentration of wine bars and brunch spots.

14. Kamboul

The far-western frontier. Vast rice fields, garment factories, and the massive new Vattanac Industrial Park. Still feels like countryside, yet only 30 minutes from the airport—perfect for sunset cycling and authentic village homestays.

Together, Phnom Penh’s 14 khans create one of the most dynamic urban collages in Southeast Asia: gilded palaces beside skybars, ancient markets beside mega-malls, quiet riverside villages beside gleaming new satellite cities—proof that the “Pearl of Asia” is very much alive and reinventing itself every day.
