1. Pailin City (Municipal District – Provincial Capital)
Pailin City is a quirky little mountain gem-town perched at 300 m elevation, surrounded by cashew orchards and misty peaks. Once the Khmer Rouge’s final cash cow thanks to its ruby and sapphire mines, today it feels like a sleepy Wild-West outpost with a Cambodian twist: gem dealers still haggle under faded wooden shophouses, karaoke bars glow neon at night, and the central market overflows with Thai snacks and glittering stones. The giant gem-shaped monument at the roundabout proudly announces you’ve arrived in “Gem City.” A short climb to Wat Phnom Yat rewards visitors with panoramic views and colourful murals depicting local history, while cool evenings and affordable hillside bungalows make Pailin surprisingly relaxing.
2. Sala Krau District
The wilder, rural half of Cambodia’s smallest province, Sala Krau spills into the lush foothills of the Cardamom Mountains. Waterfalls tumble through jungle clearings, ethnic Por villages maintain traditional longhouses, and old gem-mining pits have become emerald swimming holes. Quiet red-dirt roads are perfect for motorbike adventures past cashew plantations and hidden border checkpoints. Community homestays let travellers join foraging walks for wild honey and medicinal plants, then sleep under thatched roofs while gibbons call at dawn. Despite its tiny size, Sala Krau feels like the last truly untouched corner of western Cambodia.
