Business travel in Cambodia: a practical guide

A practical guide to business travel in Cambodia: visas, airports, where to stay, getting around, meetings, money and staying connected.

In this guide

Cambodia's economy has grown quickly in recent decades, and Phnom Penh is the centre of business, government and investment. Whether you're attending meetings, a conference or exploring opportunities, here's what to know.

Visas

Business travellers usually need an ordinary (business) visa rather than a tourist visa, particularly if they plan to stay longer or extend their stay. Many nationalities can apply online or get a visa on arrival. Rules change, so check official government websites before you travel.

Arriving

Phnom Penh's Techo International Airport opened in September 2025 and is the main gateway for business travellers. Siem Reap Angkor International Airport serves the northwest. Allow time for transfers, as both airports are some distance from the city centres.

Where to stay

  • BKK1 and the city centre: close to embassies, offices and restaurants.
  • Riverside: convenient for government offices and the Royal Palace area.
  • Koh Pich: near exhibition and convention venues.
  • Serviced apartments: for longer stays.

Getting around

Ride-hailing apps are the most convenient way to get around Phnom Penh. Hiring a car with driver is useful for a full day of meetings. Allow extra time for traffic.

Meetings and etiquette

  • Be punctual, but expect some flexibility.
  • Exchange business cards with both hands.
  • Address people with titles and show respect to senior figures.
  • Build relationships; business often relies on trust and personal connections.

Money

The US dollar is widely used in business alongside the riel. Cards are accepted in hotels and many restaurants, but carry cash for smaller expenses.

Staying connected

Mobile data is affordable and widely available. Buy a local SIM or eSIM on arrival. Many hotels and coworking spaces have good internet.

Health and safety

  • Drink bottled or filtered water.
  • Be careful with belongings in busy areas.
  • Check travel insurance and medical cover.

Working hours and holidays

Government offices and many businesses work Monday to Friday, with some open on Saturday mornings. Many businesses close during Khmer New Year, Pchum Ben and other holidays. Check dates when planning your trip.
